Did the people drink alcohol in the first century?  The answer is yes they did.  Alcohol served a purpose to killing dysentery in water.  In fact, people would have had to drink some level of alcohol to avoid being sick from the water.  In the first century, they did not have water filtration like we do today.  In many places around the world, people have to be careful with the water they drink.  The first century was no different.  However, there is a difference between the alcohol that they would have had for their water and what the Bible calls strong drink.
